Amazon Echo Show

Design Challenge

Design UX screen patterns for a multimodal device where the primary input is voice.

Insight

The screen is the size of a tablet but if we follow similar design patterns customers won’t be able to use the device at a distance and it may discourage voice interaction.

Inspiration

Our UX researcher conducted an eye test using the working group as subjects to determine the minimum font size visible from a 7ft distance.

Solution

A set of patterns for Echo Show (Passive content, Multi Media, Rich Text, Simple List and Hierarchical List) that are 7ft friendly, voice-forward and simple.

Process

The project was broken up into Chapters (Core UX, Home, Voice Chrome, Visual Design, Domains) to provide runway for design and set expectations with leadership.

The team began by developing Core UX patterns. Working team designers were assigned problems to solve and asked to provide a range of design options for review.

Designs were shared in group critique sessions to refine and select options to review with leadership.

Design options were reviewed with leadership including the CEO of Amazon as well as the SVP for Devices to align on and close key decisions.

The working team then refined designs based on feedback and created UX specifications of patterns. I focused on the list pattern.

We then used the patterns to design for domain experiences. Using the patterns I designed the To Do and Shopping list experiences.

My Role: I was a member of the working team who developed multimodal design patterns for the first generation Echo Show. I then went on to design various domain experiences for Echo Show including To Do and Shopping Lists, Calendar, and Messaging.

Results

The Echo Show shipped to customers in 2017 and over the last 8 years we’ve continued to improve the customer experience and added a range of device sizes to the Echo family.
